What Is a Linear DC Power Supply?
A linear power supply uses a transformer to turn the AC line voltage to a series of lower AC voltages, one of which is selected and converted to a very clean DC voltage via rectifier/filtering circuitry. That DC voltage is then regulated into the desired dc voltage using a variable voltage regulator/divider circuit. A linear power supply tends to have low ripple and noise. Compared to a switching power supply with the same output, it is usually heavier, larger, and less efficient.
