What is anodizing and why is it done?
Anodizing is an electrochemical process that coats the metal surface with a chrossion resistant, durable and sometimes decorative oxide layer. During this process, the metal is connected to the positive of the power supply, hence the anode. Aluminum is most widely used in anodizing, followed by magnesium, titanium zinc, chromium, and stainless steel.
What is an anodizing power supply?
An anoodizing power supply or rectifier is a dc power supply that drives the anodic oxidization of the metal surface, and is a very critical component of an anodizing setup. A variable dc power supply is typically needed for anodizing, as the dc current required is proportional to the the surface area of the metal parts, and the desired thickness of the oxide layer is proportional to the dc voltage of the power supply. In a commercial set up where large parts or a large number of smaller parts are anodized simultaneously, an industrial rectifier can provide large current needed and operate reliabley in a corrosive environment.
