What is a suitable Power Supply for dc motors?
A suitable dc power supply to run a dc motor needs to have sufficiently high current ratings, ideally higher than the stalled current of the dc motor, so that the motor will be able to start even under full load. The maximum voltage of the dc power supply needs to be higher than the operating voltage of the dc motor, as recommended by the dc motor manufacturer. Finally, the dc power supply should not have short circuit protection.
What is reverse emf and how to protect your power supply from it?
A DC motor acts like an inductor when its power is interruppted, and will try to maintain the current and by doing so creates an EMF (potential) in the reverse direction; this is called reverse EMF or back EMF, which can potentially cause damage to the power supply. To protect your power supply from back EMF, you can use a diode shown below.
