Battery Charging & Equalizing

Can you charge a battery with a dc power supply?

A regulated variable dc power supply can be used to charge pretty much any batteries. It is important to charge a battery using manufacturer's recommended charging voltage, as too high a voltage can potentially damage the battery; this is why a regulated adjustable power supply is typically needed. Having said that, lead acid batteries are more tolerant than lithium ion batteries when it comes to voltage needed.

How to charge a battery with a dc power supply?

To charge a battery, you first need to set a limit for both voltage and current. Next you connect the battery to the dc power supply positive to positive, and negative to negative (it is critical not to connect with the wrong polarity). A typical charge cycle starts with the constant current mode where the current is held constant and the voltage of the battery increases as the charge goes on, and is switched to the constant voltage mode when the voltage of the battery reached the preset limit. During the constant voltage mode, the voltage is held constant while the current slowly goes down as the charging continues, until the current is at a sufficiently low level and the charging process is deemed  to be completed.

What batteries can the Volteq dc power supplies charge?

Volteq DC power supplies are great for charging and equalizing batteries, including Lithium Polymer (LiPo), Lithium Ion, Lithium Manganese, A123 (LiFePO4), NiCd, NiMH, Lead Acid batteries (Flooded, Gel, AGM, SLA), etc.. The built-in over-voltage and reverse-voltage protection make them robust and durable. You can conveniently and accurately set the output voltage or current to suit your needs, and monitor the charging process at ease.

Please follow battery manufacturers' recommended procedures to charge and equalize batteries. In particular, you need to pay attention to the temperature of the battery cells as it affect the equlizing voltage. Sufficient ventilation and protective procedures must be taken to avoid acid spill and poisoning by hydrogen gas and other gases/fumes from the equalizing process.
